U.S. stocks made a sharp retreat Thursday, with major stock indexes fell more than 2.5 percent, after the government said the U.S. unemployment rate hit a 26-year high. At the close, the Dow Jones industrials are down 223.32, or 2.63 percent, to 8,280.74.
