U.S. stocks closed broadly lower Monday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average notching its first close below 10,000 since Nov. 4, as the financial sector came under pressure, and markets gauged recovery prospects amid persistent fears about European sovereign debt. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 103.84 points, or 1.04%, to 9,908.39. The S&P 500 lost 9.45 points, or 0.89%, to 1,056.74. The Nasdaq Composite sank 15.07 points, or 0.70%, to 2,126.05.

Stocks traded mixed Monday, following a better-than-expected fourth-quarter earnings report from toy maker Hasbro, as investors remained wary about the strength of the economic recovery and mounting debt in Europe. In midday trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lately fell 13.07 points to 9,999.16. The S&P 500 Index was up 2.20 points to 1,068.39. The Nasdaq Composite gained 8.55 points to 2,149.67.
