Stocks Ended Lower on Trade Concerns

-- Friday, September 20, 2019, 16:49 --

U.S. stocks ended lower on Friday after pessimism over U.S.-China trade relations rose following a decision by the Chinese trade delegation to cancel visits to farms in Montana and Nebraska, potentially signalling a lack of progress on trade negotiations. The Dow Jones Industrial Average sank 159.72 points, or 0.59%, to 26,935.07. The S&P 500 declined 14.72 points, or 0.49%, to 2,992.07. The Nasdaq Composite fell 65.21 points, or 0.80%, to 8,117.67.

Oil futures finished lower on Friday, but registered a sharp gain for the week, their largest in months, after attacks on Saudi Arabian production facilities last weekend raised concerns over the amount of spare capacity in the oil market. West Texas Intermediate crude for October delivery fell by 4 cents, or 0.07%, to finish at $58.09 a barrel, with the contract logging a 5.9% weekly advance. November Brent crude lost 12 cents, or 0.2%, to $64.28 a barrel and marked a 6.7% weekly advance.
