-- Monday, April 6, 2020, 9:50 --

U.S. stocks opened sharply higher on Monday, as investors geared up for another week of closely monitoring developments around the global coronavirus outbreak and policymakers’ responses to the pandemic. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lately jumped 807.77 points, or 3.84%, to 21,860.30. The S&P 500 advanced 90.48 points, or 3.64%, to 2,579.13. The Nasdaq Composite rose 256.27 points, or 3.48%, to 7,629.35.

Oil futures headed lower Monday morning in electronic trade after a key meeting between oil giants Saudi Arabia and Russia was tentatively shifted to Thursday, amid rising tensions between the world’s biggest oil producers over the weekend. West Texas Intermediate crude for May delivery dropped 79 cents, or 2.8%, to $27.55 a barrel. June Brent crude, meanwhile, slipped 2.7%.

Over the weekend, coronavirus cases rose in major centers around the world but at an at least temporarily slower pace than in recent weeks.
