AGNC Investment Corp. operates as a U.S.-based real estate investment trust (REIT). Its primary focus is on acquiring residential mortgage-backed securities (RMBS) and collateralized mortgage obligations (CMOs). A key characteristic of these assets is that their principal and interest payments are backed by guarantees from U.S. government agencies or government-sponsored enterprises, enhancing their credit quality. To finance these holdings, AGNC predominantly relies on secured borrowing arrangements, specifically repurchase agreements, using its portfolio as collateral. As an elected REIT under the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, the company enjoys exemption from federal corporate income tax. This tax-advantaged status is contingent upon distributing at least 90% of its taxable income to its shareholders annually. Originally incorporated in 2008, the entity was previously known as American Capital Agency Corp. before adopting its current name, AGNC Investment Corp., in September 2016. Its corporate headquarters are located in Bethesda, Maryland.
