Could the Bezos Earth Fund spark a new era of clean tech innovation?
Jeff Bezos's $10bn offer could go a long way in the fight against climate change - the world now needs to step up with similar ambition, argues Good Energy's Tom Steward Jeff Bezos rarely does anything by halves and last week was one such example: a single Instagram post announced the launch of a new $10bn fund to fight the climate crisis. That's $10bn of his own money. The new 'Bezos Earth Fund' will be used "to help preserve and protect the natural world" with initial grants to be issued as early as this summer. The prospect of investing $10bn of new money to accelerate the transition to a zero-carbon economy is tantalising. Add to that Microsoft's new $1bn Climate Innovation Fund, launched last month, and the landscape starts to shift. Some will cry greenwash or PR spin, others will see this as a strong example of businesses recognising the need to pursue purpose, and not just profit, as their reason for existing. This is a compelling idea which has been at Good Energy's heart for the past 20 years, and is now gaining traction with global corporates. $11bn can go a long way in the fight against climate change.

Polling: Environmental concern rises amid robust support for renewables
YouGov poll indicates the environment is now the third top issue among voters behind health and Brexit Public concern for the environment appears to still be on the rise, with the latest polling indicating green issues are currently more important than the economy to voters. A YouGov poll commissioned by The Times asked voters to name their top three most important issues facing the country, with environment coming in as the third top choice among voters, surging from 10th position in the same poll two years ago. Among those polled, 28 per cent cited the environment as one of their top three issues facing the UK, while 44 per cent named health, and 43 per cent pointed to Brexit, marking the first time since 2016 the UK's exit from the EU has not been the top issue of concern for voters, YouGov said. Environment is now of greater importance among voters than the economy, which was cited by 27 per cent of those polled, and crime, which was among the top issued named by 26 per cent of respondents, the survey results released on Wednesday show.
